As a boy in Harlingen, it was hard for Ezequiel Peña to see beyond the Rio Grande Valley. His mother was from Runge (pop. 1,080) in South Texas, his father from Mexico. The fifth of seven children, Ezequiel and his siblings lived for a while on public assistance.

Chris Robinson introduced himself to a Thiry Auditorium assembly as an overcomer, a young man who escaped Hurricane Katrina as a child, fled the floodwaters of New Orleans, grew up in Texas and became the first African American to serve as Student Government Association president at Our Lady of the Lake University.

Golden anniversary classes from Our Lady of the Lake College and Our Lady of the Lake High School were the special guests during Alumni Weekend held on campus Nov. 13-15. Members of the classes of 1965 visited with the Sisters of Divine Providence, toured campus, gathered for special dinners and attended mass. They also joined other alumni in a variety of events including classes on painting, writing, yoga and mixology.

The evening is designed to raise funds for a scholarship in Sister Jane Ann’s name. Seats are $100 per person and various sponsorship levels are available.

Thanks to the generosity of more than 580 donors, OLLU raised $24,527 during the second annual Big Give S.A. fundraiser. Cullen Grinnan is a mobile professor with a global classroom. He teaches online counseling courses from his home in San Antonio, a second house in Corpus Christi and his office at OLLU. Our Lady of the Lake University’s (OLLU) Master of Science in Psychology with a specialization in Family, Couple and Individual Psychotherapy has received accreditation from The Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE). OLLU is one of four universities in Texas with a COAMFTE accredited master’s program. COAMFTE accreditation allows graduates to seek employment as Marriage and Family Therapists within the federal government. The program is offered on the San Antonio and Houston (The Woodlands) campuses of OLLU.

The monument arrived in 1914 as a goodwill gift from Japanese professor and world traveler Dr. Shigetaka Shiga. The professor donated the gift, in part, because he recognized striking parallels between the Battle of the Alamo and a Japanese conflict known as the Battle of Nagashino in 1575.

New Frontiers Charter School is going where few charter schools in Texas have gone before. In the fall of 2014, New Frontiers will start an Early College High School, a dual credit program that will enable students to graduate with a high school diploma and an associate’s degree from Palo Alto College at no cost to parents.

The Christmas season will get underway Dec. 6-7 at OLLU with Las Posadas and Candlelight – two longstanding OLLU traditions. In its 26th year, Las Posadas reenacts Joseph and Mary's search for lodging on the eve of the birth of Jesus. Candlelight, in its 78th year, includes an Advent Prayer Service, caroling in the Moye Rotunda and a reception for alumni.

Antoinette Winstead wanted to be an actress. She grew up to perform a plethora of real-life roles. Professor Winstead teaches screenwriting. She writes novels and directs theater. She composes poetry, works as a playwright and is the program head for the drama and mass communications programs. He had failed the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) test and didn’t care. Ezekiel’s reputation followed him into fifth-grade at Burke Elementary School. His bilingual education teacher, Maricela Alarcon (MEd 2007), asked one question that changed his life: “What is your passion?”
Ezekiel replied, “Skateboarding.”

Roger Soto BA Communication Arts 2011
Roger Soto entered Our Lady of the Lake University as a first-generation college student. He came from a community where people lived in poverty and he witnessed drug addiction, gang violence and alcoholism. Soto was a young teen who only dreamed of receiving a degree. “I would have never thought it possible for someone like myself to have a degree,” Soto expressed.

The news caught teacher Susan R. Hernandez by surprise. A former math student, serving an internship in Japan, had nominated Hernandez for a prestigious honor in education. Susan Murphy fell in love with biology in third grade. It happened when she cut open an earthworm. There were five hearts  “aortic arches,” as she calls them  and the fascination of that discovery precipitated another. “I’m going to be a doctor,” she decided.

Jeff Flores wasn’t good at math. He remembers taking college algebra five times. He remembers dropping the class four times.

On his fifth attempt, he met with his professor before class and after class. He met with the professor on weekends. Flores spent hours with the professor outside of class until -- voila -- they both made a discovery.

After 58 years of service to OLLU, Sister Isabel Ball, CDP, is retiring. During a farewell celebration on May 10, Sister Ball was presented with 58 red roses to commemorate her years at OLLU, and two additional white roses to honor her 60 years as a CDP. She was also given an iPad and her own street on campus. From now on, the west entrance to campus from Commerce St. will be known as Sister Isabel's Way.

Roger Soto grew up in the Victoria Courts, a low-income housing project on the edge of downtown. He lived with his single mother, seven siblings and the sound of police sirens. Where Roger came from, there was crime and trouble and kids headed for prison. College seemed like a distant, faraway place.

More than 800 hundred students from seven San Antonio high schools and academies assembled for a pep rally at the end of an all-day youth conference called, “Leaders for the 21st Century.” After attending sessions on preparing for college and the cost of a higher education, students cheered as conference leaders announced the winners of gifts and giveaways.

A professor of communication disorders, Dr. Mary Ann Acevedo is winding down a 19-year career at Our Lady of the Lake University. She has served OLLU with distinction. For more than a decade, she was the Department Chair of the Communication Disorders Program and directed the Harry Jersig Speech and Hearing Clinic. Dr. Acevedo became a part-time faculty member in 2010 and plans to retire after the 2012-13 academic year.

In 1973, Dr. Gloria Rodriguez (BA ‘70, MEd ‘73) founded an inner city non-profit -- Avance -- that changed the lives of thousands of families in poor Latino neighborhoods. To address the soaring dropout rate of Hispanic youth, she ventured into the Mirasol Housing Project and began parenting classes for mothers, most of whom had little education.

OLLU shaped a giant in bilingual education
The U.S. Secretary of Education was on the phone, asking Rita Esquivel if she would become director of the Office of Bilingual Education and Minority Affairs. At the time, Rita was the assistant superintendent for education in California’s Santa Monica-Malibu Unified Independent School District, a position that placed her in charge of the district’s bilingual programs.

Three weeks after a small web development company released him in 2010, Eddy interviewed with Rackspace Hosting, the world’s leading specialist in hosting and cloud computing. Beginning this fall, OLLU will be launching two new bachelor’s degrees in the healthcare field: a Bachelor of Science in Healthcare Administration (BSHCA) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing – RN to BSN program. In preparing graduates for the rapidly growing, in-demand field of information technology, the Computer Information Systems and Security (CISS) program at OLLU is setting the local standard. Certified by the National Security Agency, the CISS program is connected to the federal government’s mission to provide cyberspace protection for the nation’s information technology network.

OLLU is launching an online master’s degree in cyber security beginning in the fall. The online Master of Science in Information Systems and Security (MS-ISS) provides information technology professionals the flexibility to continue working while earning an advanced degree. The program can be completed in one year.

Darrell Hoberer
Our Lady of the Lake University has become a second home to Darrell Hoberer. He began his undergraduate studies at OLLU in 1993, took his first job at the Lake in ‘97, graduated in 2002 and currently works as a systems administrator.

Alumni gathering will feature sneak peek of Main Building
Plan to attend Alumni Weekend on Nov. 5-7 which will include a sneak peek tour of the completely rebuilt and renovated Main Building. The official opening of Main Building will take place later in the fall, but alumni and their guests will be among the first to check out all the improvements.

The rebuilt spire from Main Building was set into place atop the north tower during a special blessing ceremony April 21. Alumni, students, trustees, faculty and staff gathered on the front lawn of the library to watch as the Sisters of Divine Providence blessed the 5,000-pound structure before it was lifted into place by a crane.

No one knew which counties had the highest attrition rate. No one knew how the dropout rates of the state's Latinos compared with those of Anglos and African-Americans.

The Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund was established in 1916 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Sisters of Divine Providence in Texas. Scholarships are awarded to undergraduate and graduate students who are relatives of OLL alumni.
